Required online courses for part-time staff
Once professional development funds are reserved to support the institutes, PD allocations may be used to support additional PD with written prior approval from KYAE. Requests should be e-mailed to Joyce Bullock at joyce.bullock@ky.gov.
Effective Adult ESL Classrooms, Part 1 (Spring 2010) April 19-May 28, 2010 Listed in PDtrack as Orientation to ESL Online Course
This 12-hour online course is divided into two parts, and provides ESL instructors with an introductory understanding of basic issues pertaining to working with English language learners. In a combination of online instruction and home-based study, participants first explore aspects related to adult learning, cross-cultural awareness and second language acquisition theory as they relate to instructional strategies, different ESL methods and lesson planning for daily classroom instruction. The ESL instructors examine and analyze curriculum and materials for the adult ESL classroom, as well as plan for instruction on the unit level. Issues related to general classroom assessment and standardized tests used for adult ESL students are covered.

Health Literacy and Financial Literacy Online Course (Spring 2010) Listed in PDtrack as Health Literacy and Financial Literacy Online Course
To address the growing need for explicit instruction in health and financial issues, this online course guides instructors toward instructional strategies for the classroom that address literacy, vocabulary, computations, as well as provide reliable resources for acquiring and using financial and health literacy materials for instruction.
This online self-paced elective course provides instructional support that address the issues of reading, writing and understanding health and financial literacy.

While funds are available, KYAE will reimburse college tuition up to $1000 per semester. Applicants must receive prior approval in writing for the course from their program director and KYAE. Each course must be completed with a grade of “B” or higher for graduate credit and “C” or higher for undergraduate credit to be considered for tuition reimbursement. Books, parking, etc. are not covered.
