Retention Toolkit
There are numerous strategies that adult education programs use to encourage students to continue their education. This toolkit provides some of the strategies suggested in the research as well as strategies that are currently in place in programs around the state. However, it is important to note that there are many reasons why students stop attending an adult education program that are beyond the instructor’s or program director’s control. Research suggests that what occurs in the first three weeks or first few classes influences the students decision on whether or not to continue attending the program. The following pages contain an overview of national and state retention data.
