Workplace Essential Skills

Developing the skills of Kentucky's workforce is one of Kentucky Adult Education's priorities and is accomplished by improving the skills of employees through workforce education services.  Kentucky Adult Education is constantly reaching out in creative ways to make it easy for employers to empower their workforce with knowledge.

Training Activities

Training can be tailored to business and industry environments, including but not limited to, manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality and retail.  Training activities may include:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Math
  • ABE/GED and workplace English as a second language
  • Kentucky Employability Certificate preparation
  • Kentucky Manufacturing Skills Standards preparation
  • Communications
  • Problem solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Team building
  • Computer literacy
Training Locations

Workplace essential skills training is delivered at a time and location most convenient for employees and employers.  Kentucky Adult Education can provide learning opportunities onsite at businesses.  Employees can also learn online at Kentucky Virtual Adult Education or work with an instructor at an adult education center.

Funding Opportunities

Employers across the Commonwealth are benefiting from the Workforce Alliance, a partnership of public agencies that fund workplace education initiatives.  Alliance members include Kentucky Adult Education, the Kentucky Department for Workforce Investment, Kentucky Community and Technical College System and the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.

Funding may be used for:

  • Instructors
  • Task analysis
  • Curriculum development
  • Instructional materials
  • Assessment
  • Administration costs associated with training

Employers are required to allow employees to attend training on company time or agree to pay employees' hourly rate if this is not an option.  Funding may not be used to purchase equipment such as, computers, printers, etc.
