The state of Kentucky ​will pay for your first GED ​test in each subject plus limited retakes (two per subject in a testing center and/or one per subject via online proctored) while funding lasts. To qualify, you must first pass the GED Ready Official Practice Test (free at a Kentucky Adult Education Prep Center).

The GED® Diploma is recognized by employers and colleges as the equivalent of a high school diploma. Free classes to prepare eligible Kentuckians to take the four-part test are available at KY Adult Education centers in every county.

If you didn't finish high school, there are free classes at KY Adult Education Centers to prepare you to take the GED® test and the GED Ready™ test is offered there at no charge as well.

AGE REQUIREMENTS FOR EARNING YOUR GED DIPLOMA

In Kentucky, the minimum age required to take the GED® test with no age approval is 19 years old. The Kentucky GED® testing program requires all those under the age of 19 to be officially withdrawn from public or private school for 90 days, as certified by the local school district, or meet other requirements in order to be eligible to schedule the GED® test. 17-year-olds may test only if they fall into one of the following categories (as defined by KRS 158.143):

  • State Agency Child
  • Child in Custody of Department of Juvenile Justice
  • Student in a District-Operated Alternative Education Program who is not on track to graduate

Students under 19 must complete the documentation of underage testing form. Submit your form through any of the methods below:

If you are in one of the following groups, please email ged@ky.gov for additional instructions:

  • Enrolled in Job Corps
  • Enrolled in ChalleNGe Academy
  • State agency child
  • In juvenile detention center or education program
  • Student in a district-operated alternative education program
